Installing Traffic Sensors

A complete guide to installing, configuring, and troubleshooting your Mero Traffic Sensors.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Traffic sensors are installed at entryways to provide valuable footfall data. Correct placement and setup are crucial for accurate people counting.

1. Pre-Installation & Placement

  • Location: Sensors must be installed on the door frame, facing directly downwards.

  • Optimal Position: People rarely walk through the exact center of a doorway. Open the door and observe the natural path someone takes; this is typically slightly off-center. Place the sensor there to maximize accuracy.

  • Hinge Direction: If the doorway has a swinging door, always install the sensor on the side opposite the door hinge.

  • Documentation: Before installing, take note of the unique Sensor ID on the device.

2. Physical Installation Steps

Step 1: Activate the Sensor

  • Pull the plastic battery tab to turn the sensor on.

  • Confirm Activation: Check the indicator lights.

    • 5 Fast Flashes: The sensor has power.

    • 5 Slow Flashes: The sensor has successfully connected to a nearby basestation.

Step 2: Mount the Sensor on the Door Frame

  1. Use the provided alcohol wipe to clean the surface of the door frame where you will place the sensor.

  2. Peel the backing off the VHB tape on the sensor.

  3. Press the sensor firmly onto the cleaned area of the door frame, holding it in place with pressure for 20-30 seconds to ensure a strong bond.

  4. Gently test to see if the sensor is secure.

Step 3: Using the Optional Mounting Bracket

If the sensor cannot be installed directly on the door frame, use the supplied bracket.

  1. Attach the traffic sensor to the bracket.

  2. Apply a piece of VHB tape to the other side of the bracket.

  3. Clean the door frame surface with the alcohol wipe.

  4. Press the bracket firmly onto the door frame for 20-30 seconds.

3. Adding the Sensor to the Control Center

Once installed, you must register the device on the platform.

  1. Navigate to Settings in the bottom-left menu.

  2. Go to the Devices tab.

  3. Click the orange Add Device button.

  4. Fill out the form:

    • Campus, Building, Floor/Space: Select the precise physical location.

    • Sensor Type: Choose Traffic from the dropdown menu.

    • Sensor ID: Enter the unique identifier from the device.

    • Nickname: Give the sensor a descriptive name (e.g., "Main Entrance - North Door").

    • Photo: It is highly recommended to upload a photo of the final installation to help locate it in the future.

  5. Click Save.

4. How to Replace the Battery

When the battery is low, follow these steps to replace it.

  1. Open the sensor: Use a coin or small flathead screwdriver to gently pry open the casing using the small ridge on the side.

  2. Remove the old battery: Pull the dead battery out of its housing.

  3. Insert the new battery: Place a new CR2477 battery into the sensor, ensuring the positive (+) side is facing the back of the sensor. Push until it clicks into place.

  4. Replace the lid: Snap the lid back on, making sure the gold ridge on the lid aligns with the groove in the base.

  5. Watch the lights: A sequence of 8 quick flashes followed by 5 slow flashes indicates a successful replacement and network connection. If you only see 8 quick flashes, the device has power but is not connected to the network; try using a pin to press the reset button. If there are no flashes, the battery may be dead or installed incorrectly.
